Our Management

The senior management team at Alliance National Insurance Company is experienced in the three most critical aspects of specialty, retention-driven insurance programs: ART underwriting, reinsurance and financial management.

H. James Agnew, Chairman and CEO
James is a co-founder and board member of Alliance National responsible for the overall management and marketing for the company. Formerly a senior executive with leading A.R.T. consultant, Commonwealth Risk, James earned a reputation as one of the company’s leading production sources for both corporate and specialty business, including recognition as “Producer of the Year”.

At Alliance, James has been integral in establishing the many strategic traditional and alternative market insurance partnerships and overall corporate strategy. He is responsible for overseeing all new business production. In 2004, he was nominated as one of the industry’s “people to watch under 40” sponsored by Business Insurance magazine.

James holds a BS from Shippensburg University and is married with four children and resides in Flourtown, PA. His interests include golf, skiing and squash.

Kevin J. T. Kelly, Chief Legal Counsel
Kevin Kelly was named Chief Legal Counsel of Alliance National Insurance Company in 2006. He has over 25 years in the legal profession with a concentration in the insurance regulatory area. Kevin has served as General Counsel for The Green Tree Insurance Company and other national insurance entities.. In the 1997, he started his own law firm and became very involved in the state regulatory law for the insurance industry. Between 2002 and 2004, Kevin worked for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department overseeing the legal aspects of the liquidation of Legion Insurance Company. After leaving the Department, he returned to private practice before joining the Alliance National investment group as legal counsel.

Kevin holds a BA from Mount St. Mary's University and earned his JD at George Mason University in 1980. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Kevin resides with his family in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

Mary Beth Torunian, CPCU, AU, Underwriting Manager
Mary Beth Torunian has an extensive background in ART structured insurance programs. Mary Beth is responsible for overseeing all Alliance National underwriting operations as well as all reinsurance arrangements; both treaty and facultative.

Prior to Alliance National, Mary Beth held several senior underwriting positions within Liberty Mutual, Legion Insurance and PMA between 1994 and 2007. Mary Beth has extensive experience utilizing many sensitive rating plans, such as: Paid Loss Retro, Incurred Loss Retro, Retention, Loss Multiplier, Large Deductible and Large Risk Alternative Rating Option (LRARO)

Mary Beth holds a BS from Ohio University. In addition, she is an active member of the CPCU Society – Philadelphia chapter. Mary Beth resides in Wayne, PA and enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, reading and the Jersey shore.

John Eagen, Risk Manager
John was hired as the Risk Manager for Alliance National in February of 2007, and was charged with creating a claims department, in addition to establishing the work flows and guidelines relating to vendor management. John has over 16 years of experience in managing claims in the insurance and reinsurance markets.

Prior to joining Alliance National, John held managerial positions with AUL Reinsurance Management Services, Legion Insurance Company & The Guard Insurance Group.

John holds a BA degree in Economics from King’s College, and is a member of multiple insurance organizations in the State of Pennsylvania. John, his wife and two children reside in Philadelphia, PA

Joseph P. Marlowe, Controller
Joseph P. Marlow was named Controller of Alliance National Insurance Company in 2009. He has over 25 years in the insurance / reinsurance business, all on the financial side of the business. Prior to coming to Alliance, Joe worked from 2002 at Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC handling the statutory accounting and regulatory reporting requirements for Excess Reinsurance Company and Guilderland Reinsurance Company.

From 1999 to 2002, Joe led the statutory accounting unit at AIG for the personal lines division. Prior to AIG, Joe spent 14 years at CIGNA Reinsurance Company and other CIGNA P&C companies, mostly in the statutory accounting area.

Joe hold two degrees from Villanova University; a BA from the Honors Program and a BS in Accounting. He also has an MBA in Finance from Widener University. Joe resides with his wife and two children in Sharon Hill, PA
